Volunteer - Make a Difference Package

What better way to practice your Spanish than helping at one of Humanity First's projects while changing the lives of communities in need. Volunteering is the richest way to experience a culture and understand the hardships of daily life in developing countries such as Guatemala. You will not only help improve the lives of others, but you will also forever be changed.

What is included in the Make a Difference package:

  • All inclusions of the Cultural Immersion package:

  • Private shuttle transport to and from the airport in Guatemala City for international arrival and departure. 

  • 20 hours a week of private Spanish lessons with a highly experienced teacher at the Learn and Help Spanish Academy in central Antigua, only 4 blocks from the Central Park.

  • All study materials, worksheets and homework necessary for classes.

  • Walking orientation tour of Antigua, including how to navigate the streets, location of key places and heritage.

  • 24-hour support from the Humanity First’s Learn and Help Academy staff

  • Three cultural immersion activities with your instructor in Antigua to practice what you learn in a real-life setting, such as visiting fincas, museums, and  historical sites in Antigua. 

  • An introduction to Humanity First's programs in Guatemala. You will be given a tour of the Humanity First academy, Masroor Ahmad school and the upcoming hospital to experience the programs that your fees and donation are directly helping to fund.

  • Accommodation with a local Guatemalan family including daily meals, shared or private room and bathroom, internet, purified water, hot showers and a family with which you can to practice conversational skills. All accommodation is located in Antigua and only a short walk to the Learn and Help Academy, Humanity First office, restaurants and key locations.

  • Free Wi-fi, computer access, purified water and coffee at the Humanity First office and academy.

  • Certification of your studies and level of Spanish fluency at the completion of your studies.

  • Assignment to one of the following volunteer projects:

       ◦    English tutor for Humanity First Scholarship students

Private English tutoring sessions to students at Humanity First Academy in Antigua to practice conversations and current lesson content.

       ◦    English teacher at Humanity First Academy or Masroor Ahmad school

Dependent on your level of proficiency in Spanish, you will work alongside the English teacher either at Masroor Ahmad school or Humanity First Academy and assist in teaching English lessons to children between the ages of 4 and 15. Advanced students will teach an independent class and create their own lesson plans to be reviewed by the English teacher prior to teaching.

       ◦    Moral or Ethical lessons at Masroor Ahmad school

Create lesson plans from a list of suggested topics such as kindness, diversity, equality, human rights, tolerance, respect, acceptance or sexual orientation to teach to various age groups at Masroor Ahmad school with the help of a translator if needed.

       ◦    Educational workshops

Present a brief introduction on various topics (pre-approved by Humanity First) that you are familiar with and facilitate group activities and/or discussion. This should be targeted to a teenage/youth audience.  Humanity First staff will provide support to beginner level Spanish students. Examples: Oral hygiene, importance of education, building your resume, make-up courses, etc. You will prepare presentations on 2-3 topics which will be repeated throughout the week.

       ◦    After-school program

Prepare daily activities for children ages 3-10, including: Art projects, board games, sports, and any other activities. Humanity First staff will provide support to beginner level Spanish students.

      ◦    Teacher support at Masroor Ahmad school

As a general teacher support at Masroor Ahmad school, you will work alongside a teacher as support throughout the lessons and be given the opportunity to teach independent lessons.

      ◦    Customized Assignment

  • Contribution towards Humanity First Guatemala’s humanitarian programs across the country to empower and improve communities in need.

  • Transport to and from your assigned project. 

What is not included in the package:

  • Flights to and from Guatemala City 

  • Travel insurance for the duration of your stay

  • Additional activities 

  • Meals outside of your home-stay accommodation 

  • Visa fees (only applicable if you stay longer than 90 days) 

  • Pre-trip costs such as vaccinations

If you are interested in pre-arranged extracurricular activities in Guatemala, including daily art, salsa classes, hiking on Volcano Pacaya, and a boat trip to Lake Atitlan, Learn and Help Academy can assist you in arranging this as a part of your package prior to your arrival. Prices will vary and are an additional cost.
